AVOID THIS COMBINATION

Propranolol directly blocks salbutamol's action and can itself trigger life-threatening bronchospasm in asthma — this combination should be avoided.

Is it safe to take Salbutamol with Propranolol?

Salbutamol opens the airways by stimulating beta-2 receptors; propranolol is a non-selective beta-blocker that blocks those very same receptors. Taking propranolol doesn't just cancel your reliever inhaler — in people with asthma it can itself provoke severe, sometimes fatal, bronchospasm. Asthma is a strong caution/contraindication for propranolol. If a beta-blocker is truly needed in someone with airway disease, cardioselective options (bisoprolol, atenolol) at low dose under specialist advice are used instead.

How do Salbutamol and Propranolol interact?

Propranolol non-selectively antagonises beta-1 and beta-2 adrenoceptors. Beta-2 blockade in bronchial smooth muscle removes the bronchodilator pathway salbutamol depends on and unmasks unopposed cholinergic bronchoconstriction. Salbutamol becomes pharmacologically ineffective at usual doses during propranolol therapy.

Who should be careful?

Everyone with asthma or COPD. Also relevant for people prescribed propranolol for anxiety or migraine who forget to mention their 'blue inhaler' — always tell prescribers you use salbutamol.

For weight-based or dosage calculations, our dosage calculators can help. If you're tracking what you eat alongside your medication, 247CalorieCheck's food and nutrition checker is worth a look too.

What if I've already taken Salbutamol and Propranolol?

If you have asthma and have taken propranolol, be alert for chest tightness, wheeze or breathlessness — seek urgent medical help if breathing deteriorates, and tell responders a beta-blocker is on board. Arrange prompt medication review; do not continue both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my Ventolin inhaler while on propranolol?

Propranolol blocks salbutamol from working and can itself cause severe bronchospasm in asthma. This combination needs urgent prescriber review.

I was given propranolol for anxiety but I have asthma — what now?

Contact the prescriber promptly. Asthma usually rules out propranolol; alternatives for anxiety symptoms exist.

Are any beta-blockers safe with asthma?

Cardioselective agents like bisoprolol are sometimes used cautiously at low doses under specialist guidance — never assume, always ask.

Why doesn't my reliever work anymore?

If you've started any beta-blocker (including eye drops like timolol), it may be blocking salbutamol. Review your full medication list with a pharmacist.
