AVOID THIS COMBINATION

Like ibuprofen, naproxen must be avoided with warfarin — it dramatically raises bleeding risk and may raise INR unpredictably. Paracetamol is the safe alternative.

Is it safe to take Naproxen with Warfarin?

Naproxen carries the same serious bleeding interaction with warfarin as ibuprofen and all other NSAIDs. It inhibits platelet function, irritates the gastric mucosa, and can displace warfarin from protein binding — all on top of warfarin's anticoagulant effect. The result is dangerously elevated bleeding risk. Naproxen's longer half-life (12-17 hours) means the interaction persists longer than shorter-acting NSAIDs. Never use naproxen as a regular painkiller on warfarin.

How do Naproxen and Warfarin interact?

Same class interaction as warfarin-and-ibuprofen. NSAIDs as a class are incompatible with warfarin for regular use: platelet COX-1 inhibition + mucosal damage + possible warfarin displacement from albumin. INR can rise unpredictably, especially in elderly patients.

Who should be careful?

All patients on warfarin. The interaction is class-wide — all NSAIDs carry this risk. Paracetamol is the universally recommended alternative (with INR monitoring for regular use).

What if I've already taken Naproxen and Warfarin?

Stop the naproxen. Arrange an urgent INR check. Watch for bleed signs: black stools, blood in urine, unusual bruising. Emergency department for any significant active bleed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take naproxen with warfarin?

No — like all NSAIDs, naproxen is contraindicated with warfarin due to severely elevated bleeding risk. Paracetamol is the safe alternative.

Is naproxen worse than ibuprofen with warfarin?

Both are dangerous with warfarin. Naproxen's longer half-life means the interaction lasts longer, but the overall risk profile is similarly high.

What painkiller is safe on warfarin?

Paracetamol — used at the lowest effective dose. Get an extra INR check if taking it daily for more than 3-5 days. See our warfarin and paracetamol page.

Can I take naproxen just once on warfarin?

Even a single dose of a full-strength NSAID can raise INR and platelet dysfunction. It is best avoided even as a one-off.
